Your App Lady

Show Notes

Series 1 Episode 13

Welcome to series 1 episode 13 of the Your App Lady Podcast!

All about apps and tech that I love and use every day.

On each episode, I’ll talk about recent tech news, recommend apps that I use myself and leave you with a great tech tip.

Tech News

I recently saw some local news that Sprint, the cellphone carrier, provided hotspots to high school students here in Houston that don’t have access to WiFi at home. This is such a big deal! Students in 2018 must have access to the internet in order to get their homework done. If they don’t have WiFi access at home, they are at a huge disadvantage.

The Houston hotspots are a part of Sprint’s 1Million Project. They announced in late 2016 that the Sprint Foundation will provide internet access to one million high school students in order to bridge the digital divide.

Kudos to Sprint!

App of the Week: Toca Birthday Party by TocaBoca

For iOS.

I love Toca Boca Apps! They all have great graphics and are well designed. The Toca Boca Apps encourage pretend play and creation. They focus on active screen time rather than passive screen time. Active screen time encourages a child to think, create and problem solve.

This app is wonderful for language skills as well as social skills. It is also fun! I love to use Toca Birthday Party for pretend play and conversation. I also use it to work on following simple commands and answering simple questions. When playing the app with a child, I will ask for a certain plate - "Please give me a purple plate". I may ask "What do you want to eat?" or "Where are you sitting?". The child has to sequence the steps to the party. I also work on prepositions with this app - "Can I eat your cake?", "Hey, that's my tea!”. Up to 3 players can play with this app. You can also play with 2 players and a stuffed animal or an imaginary friend.

Tech Tip

Who knows where the manual went?

Enabling the Board Game Answers skill lets Alexa remind you of how to play tons of your favorite games, including Monopoly and Pandemic. Simply say, "Alexa, ask Board Games who goes first in Scrabble." Debate over.
